Samsung's new 870 QVO range offers the first 8TB SSD for consumers

Samsung has launched the next generation of its QVO line of high-capacity consumer solid-state drives: the 870 QVO. It will be available from Samsung and other retailers from June 30th. You can choose from various memory configurations.

The 870 QVO starts at 1 TB at $ 129.99 and increases to 2 TB of storage for $ 249.99 and $ 499.99 for the 4 TB model. If you're browsing a lot of data, you might be interested in the 8 TB option that will be available in August. This is the first of this capacity created by Samsung. The price of the 8TB option is not yet public, though a leak at Amazon earlier this month Tom's hardware states that it will cost $ 900 and may appear on August 24.

The 870 QVO is the successor to the 860 QVO that came on the market in late 2018, and the interior of this new drive is similar. It's a 2.5-inch SATA drive that fits most desktops and laptops, and it uses Samsung's 4-bit multilevel cell architecture (also called quad-level or QLC in this model) in order to keep the price reasonable costs for faster transmission speeds.

The 870 QVO seems to offer a small increase in speed improvements at sequential read and write speeds of 560 MB / s and 530 MB / s – a gain of 10 MB / s in both categories compared to the predecessor. (Samsung says its latest SSD has a 13 percent advantage over its predecessor when it comes to random read speeds.)

The most attractive aspect of this new product line is that an 8 TB model is launched. According to Samsung, this model should be able to transfer up to 2,880 terabytes of data over its entire lifespan. The SSDs with smaller capacities do not have such a high overall throughput. The 4TB model is said to write a total of 1,440TB, while the 2TB and 1TB models will be able to write 720TB and 360TB throughout their lifespan. Each drive has a three-year warranty.

An 8 TB option is tempting as game installation sizes have grown in size in recent years. However, this is not the best option if speed is really important to you. If your desktop motherboard has an M.2 slot, Samsung's 970 EVO Plus NVMe 1 TB SSD offers significantly improved performance. but with smaller capacities at a much higher price than the new 870 QVO.
